Religious Liberty and the Founding of America

Explore the role religious liberty played in early America and learn how freedom of religion became a right guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Documents include George Washington’s first Thanksgiving Proclamation and a printing of his letter to the Roman Catholics in America, along with others that illuminate how the First Amendment’s Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses came to be drafted.
