Episode 7: The Magic of Schoolhouse Rock!

What made Schoolhouse Rock! so magical, and why do the songs continue to resonate 50 years later?

In this episode, Julie Silverbrook, chief content and learning officer at the National Constitution Center, and Lindsey Cormack sit down with Aralee Dorough, Nina Lynn, and Lisa Maxwell, three women with deep personal ties to Schoolhouse Rock! who are working to preserve, celebrate, and extend the legacy of this beloved educational series. Together, they explore what made Schoolhouse Rock! groundbreaking, from its singular ability to make learning joyful and memorable to the lasting power of songs that generations of children still know by heart. They reflect on why the series continues to resonate more than 50 years later, why its magic has proven so difficult to recreate, and what today’s parents and educators can learn from a cultural phenomenon that did more than teach children about civics. It inspired generations to see learning as something engaging, memorable, and worth carrying with them throughout their lives.

Participants 

Aralee Dorough is principal flutist of the Houston Symphony and an affiliate artist on the Moores School of Music faculty. She is the daughter of legendary jazz musician and composer Bob Dorough, who composed and performed many of Schoolhouse Rock!’s most unforgettable songs. 

Nina Lynn is theproducer of Schoolhouse Rock Live!, the acclaimed stage musical that continues to bring these timeless songs to life for new generations of children, parents, and grandparents. 

Lisa Maxwell is an acclaimed jazz vocalist, educator, and the widow of George Newall, the executive producer and co-creator of Schoolhouse Rock!. Through her work, Lisa continues to share George’s vision and the remarkable story behind one of the most beloved educational series in television history. 

Lindsey Cormack is an associate professor of political science at Stevens Institute of Technology. She has authored two books, How to Raise a Citizen (And Why it’s Up to You to Do It) and Congress and U.S. Veterans: From the GI Bill to the VA Crisis. She created and maintains the digital database of all official Congress-to-constituent e-newsletters at dcinbox.com. 

Julie Silverbrook is chief content and learning officer at the National Constitution Center, where she leads the strategy, development, and delivery of the Center’s content, public programs, and educational initiatives, advancing its mission of nonpartisan constitutional education and civil dialogue. She oversees the creation of public-facing constitutional content and works to ensure the Center’s programs, scholarly engagement, and educational resources operate as a coordinated national strategy serving students, educators, families, and lifelong learners across the country.
