Philadelphia, PA (September 9, 2020) – On Thursday, September 17, 2020, the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, the National Constitution Center will host an online celebration featuring U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch.
Justice Gorsuch, who is also the Honorary Chair of the National Constitution Center, will join National Constitution Center President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen for a live, online Student Town Hall to discuss his career, the role of the judicial branch, and what it’s like to sit on the Supreme Court. The program is free and open to the public, so that students, teachers, and parents can join in the constitutional conversation. Registration details are available here.
The session with Justice Gorsuch is part of the National Constitution Center’s schedule of 2020-2021 live classes on the Constitution for middle school, high school, and college students. The remote learning initiative featuring synchronous and asynchronous classes includes guest scholars and allows the Center to engage learners of all ages in the text, meaning, and history of the U.S. Constitution wherever learning takes place.
Other online programming on Constitution Day, September 17, will include tours of the National Constitution Center’s Signers’ Hall and The 19th Amendment exhibits; live constitutional Q & A sessions with the Center’s education team in exhibit spaces; a live reading of the preamble to the Constitution; and more. In the evening of Constitution Day, at 6:30 p.m. EDT, the National Constitution Center will award its 32nd annual Liberty Medal to the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, for her efforts to advance liberty and equality for all. The Center will honor Justice Ginsburg through a video tribute in words and live music broadcast. The program, featuring performances by internationally renowned opera singers and tributes from special friends of Justice Ginsburg, will be produced by NBCUniversal and will air at constitutioncenter.org/liberty-medal.
The National Constitution Center’s Interactive Constitution has various resources available to help teachers and students, as well as lifelong learners, engage with the Constitution on Constitution Day and all year round. The free online platform offers extensive primary and secondary sources and a content-rich media library with videos, podcasts, blog posts, and lesson plans, at no cost and available with no login or password required. The Interactive Constitution, has received over 30 million views since it launched in 2015.
Admission to the museum on Thursday, September 17, will be free courtesy of Citizens. The National Constitution Center is currently operating on a modified schedule. The Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum experience includes the Center’s newest exhibit, The 19th Amendment: How Women Won the Vote; Civil War and Reconstruction: The Battle for Freedom and Equality; the multimedia theatrical production of Freedom Rising presented on the Grand Hall Overlook; and the iconic Signers’ Hall.
