Share

This activity is part of Module 9: The Judicial System and Current Cases from the Constitution 101 Curriculum

Article III of the Constitution establishes the national government’s judicial branch: the federal judiciary, headed by a single Supreme Court. In this activity, you will examine the current justices of the Supreme Court and learn how a Supreme Court nominee gets appointed to the Supreme Court.

Review the Info Brief: SCOTUS Class Photos presentation and read the Info Brief: Supreme Court document and answer the following questions.

  • What do you notice? How are the justices organized? (Why)
  • How many justices are there? Was that always the case?
  • How many justices can you name?
  • Who is the chief justice?
  • How many are people of color?
  • How many are women?
  • What are the formal requirements to become a Supreme Court justice?

Further Reflection
As you examined the photos of the Supreme Court, was there anything else you observed? Was there anything that you wondered? Write down your additional thoughts and questions here, and then discuss them with your class.
