NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER ANNOUNCES ‘GUARDRAILS OF DEMOCRACY’ REPORTS

Launch event July 6, 2022, showcases proposals to strengthen democracy featuring

Edward Foley, Sarah Isgur, and Clark Neily

Philadelphia, PA (July 6, 2022) – The National Constitution Center today announced the publication of the reports of its Restoring the Guardrails of Democracy initiative, which has brought together America’s leading constitutional scholars and thought leaders of diverse perspectives to identify reforms that could preserve the institutional guardrails on which democracy depends.

“The National Constitution Center is honored to have convened three diverse teams of scholars—conservative, libertarian, and progressive—to identify institutional and technological reforms that could strengthen the guardrails of American democracy,” said Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center. “During this time of intense polarization, the Constitution Center is committed to convening Americans of different perspectives to engage in thoughtful deliberation and civil dialogue about how to strengthen the constitutional checks on which our democracy depends.”

Team conservative is comprised of Sarah Isgur of The Dispatch; Jonah Goldberg of The Dispatch, and David French of The Dispatch. Team libertarian includes Clark Neily of Cato Institute, Ilya Somin of the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University, and Walter Olson of Cato Institute. Team progressive is Edward Foley of The Ohio State University and Franita Tolson of USC Gould School of Law. The reports for each team are available here.

To mark the release of the reports, the Center will also host an America’s Town Hall program on July 6, 2022, at 7 p.m. ET, during which team leaders Sarah Isgur, Clark Neily, and Edward Foley will discuss their proposals. Registration for the free virtual program is available here. A recording of the program will also be posted on the Center’s website and YouTube channel.

Leading up to the completion of the reports, the National Constitution Center has partnered with organizations including the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, With Honor, and others to convene a range of thought leaders in a series of public programs and podcasts examining these important topics. A full list of programs is available here.

The Restoring the Guardrails of Democracy initiative is made possible with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and Mike and Jackie Bezos.
