Marking the nation’s semiquincentennial, this Institute examines how the founding principles— such as consent of the governed, liberty, equality, and federalism and separation of powers— continue to guide and challenge the American constitutional system. Participants will consider how these principles have evolved across two and half centuries of constitutional change, civic participation, and civil dialogue.
Teachers will explore these themes using the Interactive Declaration of Independence and its Essays Library, primary sources, museum exhibits (including the Center’s two newest exhibits on America’s founding and the separation of powers and federalism), and scholar discussions that illuminate how Americans have interpretated founding ideals in different eras. Classroom application is at the core of this experience: Educators will develop classroom-ready materials that help students trace the story of America’s principles from the founding era to today.
This institute is designed for educators teaching grades 5-12 and runs from 4 p.m. on Sunday through noon on Friday. Some meals will be provided, and a stipend will be available to help offset travel and lodging costs. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled sessions and complete a final classroom project as part of the Institute experience. Please review the NCC’s Guide to Educator Institutes for full details before applying.
