Landmark Supreme Court Cases

Date
Sunday, July 19 - Friday, July 24
Time
All Day

Throughout the nation’s history, the Supreme Court has defined and redefined constitutional principles through landmark decisions that continue to shape American life. This Educator Institute invites teachers to take a thematic look at some pivotal cases that illuminate the power of judicial review, the evolution of rights, and the balance of federal and state powers.

Participants will use the Center’s resources like the Supreme Court Cases Library, primary source opinion excerpts, and conversations with constitutional experts to deepen their understanding of constitutional interpretation and the Court’s role in democracy. They will also get to explore the Center’s exhibit spaces, including two new exhibits on America’s founding and the separation of powers and federalism. Educators will gain accessible tools and discussion strategies that support students in analyzing the Court’s impact and engaging thoughtfully with constitutional issues from the past and those in the headlines today.

This institute is designed for educators teaching grades 5-12 and runs from 4 p.m. on Sunday through noon on Friday. Some meals will be provided, and a stipend will be available to help offset travel and lodging costs. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled sessions and complete a final classroom project as part of the Institute experience. Please review the NCC’s Guide to Educator Institutes for full details before applying.
