Finding Equality in the Declaration of Independence

Danielle Allen's book , Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality is an in depth examination of the Declaration of Independence.  In just 1,337 words, the Declaration changed the course of the modern world, but it is now rarely read from start to finish, much less understood.

Presented in conjunction with the museum’s feature exhibition, Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello, Allen tackled the contradictions between ideals and reality in a document that perpetuated slavery, finding new meaning in Thomas Jefferson’s understanding of equality. National Constitution Center Senior Education Fellow Christopher Phillips moderated.
