2014 LIBERTY MEDAL CEREMONY AND GALA
The National Constitution Center is pleased to announce that our 26th Annual Liberty Medal Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. We are honored to award this year’s Liberty Medal to Malala Yousafzai for her continued demonstration of courage and resilience in the face of adversity and serving as a powerful voice for young women being denied their basic human rights.
Malala Yousafzai came to international attention at the age of 11 by writing for the BBC about life under the Taliban in her native Pakistan. Using the pen name Gul Makai, she often spoke about her family’s fight for girls’ education. In October 2012—in retaliation for her statements—Ms. Yousafzai was targeted for assassination by the Taliban as she was returning from school. Having miraculously survived a gunshot wound to the head and undeterred by death threats, she has become an even stronger champion for universal access to education. Ms. Yousafzai has recently become the youngest person ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
