Ringing out 2011 (with thanks to the “12 Days of Christmas” song)

December 25, 2011 by Paige Scofield

We here at Constitution Daily love the holidays. The office is filled with festive cheer and delicious treats.  In that spirit, we offer our spin on the beloved “12 Days of Christmas” song, counting down the stories that made headlines in 2011. Just to reimind you, here's how the last verse of the song goes:

"On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...12 drummers drumming...11 pipers piping...10 lords-a-leaping...9 ladies dancing...8 maids-a-milking...7 swans-a-swimming...6 geese-a-laying...5 gold rings...4 colly birds...3 French hens...2 turtle doves...And a partridge in a pear tree."

And here's our countdown:

12: The number of Congressional members on the supercommittee who failed to pass legislation on the budget.11: The current job approval rating of Congress, by Americans.10: The number of the year’s best Constitution Daily staff posts.9: The centerpiece number in former presidential candidate Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 economic plan.8: The number of Supreme Court Justices that Governor Rick Perry thought were on the bench.7: The number of prominent Republican presidential candidates left in the race on the eve of the Iowa caucus.6: The number in 10 Americans in the AP-NCC poll who say the country needs a stronger sense of community.5: The number of months Rep. Gabrielle Giffords spent in the hospital before returning home after a shooting incident at a constituent event.4: The number in 10 people polled by the New York Times/CBS News who view the Tea Party as “not favorable.”3: The number of countries (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya) whose leadership has changed as a result of the Arab Spring.2: The number of American hikers released from prison in Iran.
