Under the watchful eye of federal troops, the freed slaves have begun to vote. They’re sending black men to state capitals and Congress, changing the complexion of our government. It was a proud day today. A Mississippi lawmaker, Hiram Revels, chaplain to a black Union regiment, was sworn in as the first black U.S. Senator. The Constitution works.
