“The states themselves have principal care of our persons, our property and our reputation, constituting the great field of human concerns.” —Thomas Jefferson
Cut taxes! Cut spending! Reduce the debt! President Jefferson’s bold plan, hand-carried to Congress by secretary Meriwether Lewis, charts a new course for America, starting today. His Republicans have battled the Federalists for nearly 10 years, clashing over what kind of national government we’d have. Each party reads the Constitution by a different light. Federalists believe in federal power. Republicans believe in states’ rights. Jefferson’s plan for action sets our direction. For now, we’ll follow the Republicans’ vision of the Constitution.
