Even before the current economic crisis began, Americans were already straining under the burden of shrinking health care coverage and rising health care costs. Over the last decade, millions of Americans have joined the ranks of the uninsured, and millions more have become underinsured. At the same time, health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs have risen steadily, and the number of families who are facing unmanageable health care costs has grown.
With the economy faltering and unemployment at its highest rate in decades, millions of Americans are at risk of losing their jobs and therefore their health insurance. Many others still have health insurance, but reductions in that coverage leaves them exposed to higher out-of-pocket costs. For a growing number of Americans, health care costs are an overwhelming burden.

From the time of America’s founding, immigration has been crucial to the nation’s growth, as well as a periodic source of conflict. Recent debate over immigration has polarized the nation, sparking rallies and marches, prompting congressional hearings, presidential initiatives and proposed legislation to reform what is widely considered an ineffective U.S. immigration system.
Approximately 24 million legal immigrants and an estimated 12 million unauthorized immigrants live and work in the United States, the highest level since the 1920s. National debate has focused on the public costs associated with the new generation of immigrant workers and the contributions that they make to our country.
