As the Supreme Court of the United States concludes its current session, the National Constitution Center welcomes veteran Supreme Court correspondent Lyle Denniston to lead a discussion with former United States Solicitor General Gregory Garre and NAACP LDF President John Payton about the most significant rulings of the term and how these decisions will impact the lives of Americans. The program will also address the announced retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens and the nomination process underway.
Gregory G. Garre is a partner at Latham & Watkins and chair of the firm’s Supreme Court and Appellate practice. He recently served as the 44th Solicitor General of the United States. Prior to that, he served as Principal Deputy Solicitor General (2005-2008) and as an Assistant to the Solicitor General (2000-2004). He has argued 29 cases before the Supreme Court and numerous other high-profile cases before the courts of appeals. This past term, he argued in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez and Monsanto v. Geerston Seed Farms. He received his J.D. degree from the George Washington University Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the law review and Order of the Coif, and his B.A. degree from Dartmouth College. He served as a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, and to Chief Judge Anthony J. Scirica of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He has taught constitutional law for many years at the George Washington University Law School.
John Payton is President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund. He was the lead counsel for the University of Michigan in successfully defending the use of race in the admissions process at its undergraduate college and at its law school. He has taught as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School and at the Georgetown Law Center. In Spring 2007, he taught a course on "The Constitution and Democracy" at Howard University Law School. He is a member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. In addition, he is a Master in the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court.
Lyle Denniston, now in his 61st year as a journalist, has reported on the Supreme Court for 51 years and covered one fourth of the Justices ever to sit on the Supreme Court bench.
