As part of the Center's current initiative"Address America," journalist and author Robert Schlesinger returns to moderate a conversation with presidential speechwriters from the staffes of Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton about the ideas, themes, and values the American public wishes to hear included in President-elect Barack Obama's Inaugural Address.
Mary Kate Cary is a professional speechwriter specializing in political and corporate communications. Cary authored over 100 Presidential addresses by former President George Bush, serving as White House speechwriter for President Bush from 1988 to early 1992. She then went on to become spokesman for U.S. Attorney General William Barr, serving in the Office of Policy and Communications at the Justice Department until the end of the Bush Administration. After leaving office, Cary became Deputy Director of Communications at the Republican National Committee in 1994. Since then, she has worked as a professional writer with numerous clients in political campaigns, Fortune 500 corporations and public interest groups.
Terry Edmonds is Associate Vice President and Editorial Director at Columbia University in New York. Mr. Edmonds served as Assistant to the President and Director of Speechwriting during the final term of President William Jefferson Clinton. In that capacity he was responsible for the production of all of the President’s domestic policy speeches on such issues as education, transportation, race relations, welfare reform, health care reform, the State of the Union and the federal budget. Prior to assuming the leadership of the White House speechwriting office and beginning in 1995, Mr. Edmonds served as Deputy Director of Speechwriting for the President. He came to the White House after two years as Deputy Director of Speechwriting for HHS Secretary, Donna Shalala.
Robert Schlesinger is deputy assistant managing editor, opinion at U.S. News & World Report. His first book, White House Ghosts: Presidents and Their Speechwriters. He teaches a course on political reporting at Boston University's Washington Journalism Center, where he also edits. From 2001 to early 2004, he was a D.C. reporter for The Boston Globe, covering issues ranging from energy and the environment to national security and the Pentagon. Earlier, he was chief congressional correspondent for Voter.com, a political Internet site, and a reporter and Political Editor at The Hill, which covers Congress. Prior to joining The Hill, he learned investigative journalism while doing research on the chemical industry and on advisers to presidential candidates at the Center for Public Integrity.
