With many Americans feeling anxious about their jobs, paychecks, home values and commuting costs, the economy looms as a major issue in the 2008 presidential campaign. As part of the National Constitution Center’s Election 08: The Power of We series, Carly Fiorina joins us to discuss the economic challenges facing the country and the next president. Fiorina is one of the most recognizable and influential business leaders in the country. As a regular passenger on John McCain’s Straight Talk Express, she is in a unique position to speak to the economic policies of the Republican nominee.
Carly Fiorina is Chairman and CEO of Fiorina Enterprises and Victory ’08 Chairman for the Republican National Committee. As former Chairman and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Company, Fiorina was the first woman to lead a Fortune 20 company. She is a regular contributor to the FOX Business Network, and her memoir, Tough Choices, is an international best seller. Fiorina also sits on the boards of numerous organizations, including the External Advisory Board for the CIA, the Centers for Disease Control, the Defense Business Board and the National Symphony Orchestra.
Zanny Minton-Beddoes, economics editor for The Economist, moderates. Before joining The Economist, she worked as an economist at the International Money Fund and, as part of a group headed by Jeffrey Sachs, an advisor for the Minister of Finance in Poland. Beddoes has written extensively about the American economy and international financial policy, and has made appearances on CNN, the BBC World Service, MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour, and CNBC.
