Achieving higher education in America is not a guarantee, and in today’s economy, those who have the academic credentials don’t necessarily have the means to enroll. Some estimates suggest that the overwhelming majority of low-income high school students expect to attend college, but fewer than half of them make it. What happens to their plans along the way?

The National Constitution Center and Philadelphia magazine present a special “Philadelphia Talks” program about public education and the journey from high school to higher education. The Center will screen the documentary film, "First Person," winner of the Best Documentary (Festival of Independents) in the 2008 Philadelphia Film Festival. Guest will then hear from director Benjamin Herold, Philadelphia Academies, Inc. President Lisa Nutter, and students portrayed in the film about how we can expand opportunities for America’s youth as they pursue college or a career.

Benjamin Herold is the Producer and Director of the documentary feature film, “First Person.” He holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Education from Temple University. “First Person” is his first film.

Lisa Nutter is the First Lady of Philadelphia and President of Philadelphia Academies, Inc., a non-profit youth development organization that works in Philadelphia’s public high schools to provide career-based learning experiences that motivate young people to stay engaged in school and that create supportive networks for them in the real world. Mrs. Nutter’s diverse professional background includes work in the fields of education, community organizing, human services, community development, and arts and culture. Mrs. Nutter has a B.S. in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.A. in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania.

Moderating this program is Larry Platt, Editor-in-Chief of Philadelphia magazine. This program is presented in partnership with Philadelphia magazine as part of “Philadelphia Talks,” a series of unique discussions about the hottest issues confronting our city.

Parking for this event is available for $7.50 at the National Constitution Center garage located at the rear of the building on Race Street between 5th and 6th Streets.
