As part of the National Constitution Center’s Election ‘08: The Power of We series, the Center will host former National Security Advisors Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft for a discussion about their new foreign policy book and the presidential election. America and the World: Conversations on the Future of American Foreign Policy is a collection of unscripted and spontaneous conversations between Brzezinski and Scowcroft, moderated by journalist David Ignatius. Their exchanges focus on the challenges and changing nature of power that the U.S. faces as a superpower in a globalized world. Despite differing political backgrounds, Brzezinski and Scowcroft agree that the U.S. needs to adapt to this new global environment. These points of overlap, along with the areas in which they disagree, only help deepen their dialogue on the complex topic of U.S. foreign policy. In addition to discussing their book, Brzezinski and Scowcroft will draw upon their experience and expertise to address the security and geopolitical challenges facing the next president and the foreign policy platforms of the two presidential nominees. During the authors’ visit to the Center, Ignatius will again fill the moderator role while Brzezinski and Scowcroft debate these critical and timely issues.

Zbigniew Brzezinski is a counselor and trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and professor of foreign policy at John Hopkins University. He formerly served as President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor, and in 1981, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role in U.S.-China relations and national security policies of the United States. The Polish born Brzezinski is also the author of many books, including the New York Times bestseller Second Chance: Three Presidents and the Crisis of American Superpower.

Brent Scowcroft is President of The Scowcroft Group, an international business and financial advisory firm. He is the former National Security Advisor for Presidents Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush. A graduate of West Point, Scowcroft achieved the rank of Lieutenant General during a twenty-nine year military career and also served as former Military Assistant to President Richard M. Nixon. He currently serves on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards and is co-author with former President George H. W. Bush of A World Transformed

David Ignatius is a columnist for The Washington Post and creator and co-moderator of Post-Global, an online conversation about international affairs with Fareed Zakaria. His column won the 2000 Gerald Loeb Award for Commentary, a 2005 Edward Weintal Special Citation, and the 1984 Edward Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting. Ignatius previously served as executive editor for the International Herald Tribune and has written for The Wall Street Journal. He has also written six novels, including Agents of Innocence and Body of Lies.

Election 08: The Power of We is a year-long national initiative created by the Center to promote active, informed citizenship during the 2008 presidential election. Election 08 features Elizabeth Edwards and Carly Fiorina.
