Loadin’ a Joe

Loadin’ a Joe

James L. Polewchak

2000-2009

I painted this from a photo I took of Gun #6 in action one hot afternoon. It was brutally hard work to load and fire a 155mm howitzer, especially when one man did the loading. Today this same shell requires two men to load it in the same manner as we did 40 years ago. Lots of old "Gun bunnies" have bad backs today. A "Joe" was slang for "projectile."
