Join Third Circuit Court of Appeals Judge, Marjorie Rendell, for an in-depth look at the First Amendment. In this first installment of the National Constitution Center's Civics Education Series, Judge Rendell begins with a brief historical perspective outlining the principles behind the amendment and how the courts examine specific cases to determine if freedom of speech is being properly upheld as intended by our founding fathers. Using selected school-related case studies, Judge Rendell walks you through the judicial decision process to gain a clear understanding of the final outcome of each case. Finally, she shares her insights and experiences when teaching the First Amendment to students of all ages and offers practical lessons that fully engage your students in learning what types of speech the First Amendment protects and what types of speech it does not.
